It was Spring Break and Lizzy, her friend Java, and a bunch of other girls were all hanging out, talking and gossiping and having fun when Java had what she thought was a great idea: they’d use a popular online dating app and find boyfriends!

But Lizzy noticed something right away – the app said Must Be 18 or older – NOT 13 OR OVER!?!?! But Java didn’t care, she thought it didn’t matter, especially if they could say they were dating older guys! Like, grown up guys, and Lizzy thought that was totally gross. She told Java, “you do whatever you want, but I’m not.” But Java was totally convincing – she said that this was their chance to finally be the cool girls.

She said that if girls like them dated bigger, older guys, that everyone would think that they were awesome! Lizzy thought about it, and, finally, just went for it!

They made a fake account – Rebecca – and used photos they found online of a really hot girl. Five days later they had tons of guys who had left messages and texts wanting to date her, them, well – Rebecca.

They chose one – Chris – 18 years old and very hip and cool looking, and started messaging with him. Lizzy felt a little bit guilty, but also a little bit excited – kind of comfortable. They started getting excited about it – about being popular!!!

Java, pretending to be Hot Rebecca, started sending messages back and forth with Chris. She told him she was eighteen!! Finally he asked her if they could meet and go on a date, and, before Lizzy could stop her, she said yes. Ooops. Java started freaking out, made excuses, and said she couldn’t meet him because she was busy.

Thats when the whole thing turned into a real disaster. Chris started harassing her, stalking her on text, and told her that if she didn’t meet him he was going to come and find her! When Java’s mother found out, even the police got involved – it was a bad scene.

Lizzy told her Mom about what happened, she felt like she had to, and, of course, she got in big big trouble – grounded from screens and everything else! But really, Lizzy was just relieved that it was over and knew that she and Java were lucky it didn’t get even more out of hand.

Lizzy learned to stay away from any dating app and the disaster that can follow until she was actually old enough to date!
