Gilbert was named the seventh best place in the United States to raise a family.
That’s according to WalletHub, which based its rankings on 47 key metrics for over 180 cities, including essential family dynamics, like the cost of housing, the quality of local school and health-care systems, and opportunities for fun and recreation.
Analyst Jill Gonzalez said one reason Gilbert ranks so highly is because 55% of families living in the city have young children.
“Another important thing that makes the city a good place for families is safety,” she said. “Gilbert has a low pedestrian fatality rate, the second lowest violent crime rate and one of the lowest property crime rates in the country.”
Gilbert was the highest-ranked Arizona city. Overland Park in Kansas ranked as best in the nation, with Fremont and Irvine as second and third-best, respectively. Next were Plano, TX; South Burlington, VT and Bismark, ND.

“Families should also consider Gilbert for its school system quality and affordable living costs,” Gonzalez said.
After Gilbert, Fargo, ND was eighth and Scottsdale ranked as the ninth best city to raise a family.
“Gilbert ranked highly in terms of socio-economics,” she said. “It has one of the largest shares of two parent families, over 80%, a low separation and divorce rate, as well as small percentages of families living in poverty and receiving food stamps.”
Scottsdale was the second-best Arizona city in this study, but was on top in WalletHub’s list of the best and worst cities to rent in. Gilbert was ranked as the third safest city. This makes sense: Gilbert was rated as the second lowest violent-crime rate per capita after Irvine, CA.
Gilbert and Scottsdale weren’t the only notable Arizona cities in this study however.
